HOME RETURN FOR ANA & HER BABY
Ana* had spent 10 years working as a Migrant Domestic Helper in Hong Kong, driven by the hope of creating a better future for her family back in Indonesia. But everything changed the day she informed her employer of her pregnancy.
Her employer handed her a letter written in English, which she could not understand. However, she instinctively felt it was a termination notice. Fear and confusion overwhelmed her as her mind raced, unsure of her rights or what steps to take next.
Despite feeling heartbroken, Ana quickly decided to let go of her anger and frustration. She knew she needed to focus on her unborn child. She was overwhelmed with uncertainty and fear about returning home to her family in Indonesia. She even considered remaining in Hong Kong under the claim of non-refoulement protection.
In January 2025, Ana reached out to PathFinders for support. After participating in our Home Country Return Programme workshop and learning more about what her decision could mean for her child’s future, she made the courageous decision to return to Indonesia. Though anxious, she believed it was the best decision for herself and her baby.
Less than a month later — on February 9, 2025 — Ana and her baby boarded a flight back to Indonesia. She is currently staying at her friend’s house. When she feels ready, she plans to approach the Indonesian Migrant Trade Unions (SBMI, Serikat Buruh Migran Indonesia) to seek assistance in reuniting with her family. She remains hopeful that someday her child will meet their extended family, surrounded by love and acceptance.
Ana now realises that every ending can be a new beginning — one filled with hope, strength and the promise of a brighter future.
