If I were a book, this is my title:
More than a Helper
A Tale of Strength & Inclusion
My story in a nutshell:
I’m a domestic helper in Hong Kong for 15 years. I’ve taken care of 6 different families while raising my two teenagers. Besides my job, I’m also a poet and a community leader. I stand up against discrimination and fight for inclusion. Through storytelling and workshops, I help other domestic helpers share their stories and find their voices. My journey shows the strength and resilience of people who are often overlooked, reminding everyone that they are more than just their jobs.
Things I want people to know about me:
I am strong. I work hard while being a mother. I fight for the rights of fellow workers. As a published poet and community leader, I help others by sharing stories and leading workshops. I show that domestic helpers are valuable people with important stories and dreams.
An Assumption I most want to correct:
Domestic helpers are not just “helpers” or slaves; we are much more than that. We are strong and creative people who do important work. Many of us are poets, writers, storytellers, teachers, and others who fight for our rights. We aim to be understood that we have dreams and lives outside of our jobs. By sharing our stories, we can change how people see us as a whole. It’s important to understand that we are valuable members of the community and deserve respect for all we do. We should be recognised for our contributions, our hard work, our sacrifices and the spirit we bring to our work.
